McLaren 650S Spider Review

By Mark Aria - Lifestyle Adventurist and Adrenaline Junkie

Car Summary

Straight from the F1 racetrack, the McLaren 650S Spider is one of the most exhilarating open-top supercars on the planet. Built using the finest materials and race-track technology, discover the ultimate thrill of high performance motoring when you hire a McLaren 650S Spider.

A superb lightweight aluminium twin-turbocharged 3.8l V8 engine sits low in the chassis for an optimised centre of gravity, allowing the McLaren 650S Spider to shoot from 0-100 km/h in under three seconds and hit a whopping top speed of 328 km/h.

This versatile sports car can makes 641 bhp and revs to a staggering 8500 rpm, yet it drives like a refined luxury car thanks to the twin turbochargers. It has one of the most efficient engines you will find in a high-performance sports car, making only 0.42g/km CO2 for every PS, while a seven-speed Seamless-Shift Gearbox is brilliantly engaged with the engine to delivers incredible refinement and efficiency.

The McLaren 650S Spider has been beautifully and painstakingly designed to maximise aerodynamic efficiency, with every curve, line and intake honed to perfection. The carbon fibre Monocell body is strong, light and exceedingly safe, and includes dramatic aerodynamic dihedral doors and energy efficient all-LED headlamps. The low front and Formula One-inspired rear diffuser create downforce to maximise traction, whilst side air intakes reduce heat by pushing hot air into cooling radiators.

An innovative Brake Steer system uses the rear brakes to manage traction, minimise understeer and control oversteer, enabling you to push the car to its limits in safety and to breathtaking effect. Every part of the luxurious interior is designed and built to perfection, with a handcrafted steering wheel, F1 inspired gearshift and integrated intelligent entertainment system. Meanwhile, the retractable hardtop opens in less than seventeen seconds at speeds of up to 30 km/h, giving you access to the ultimate convertible driving experience at the touch of a button.

“The new McLaren really is almost preposterously fast”

The speed of the McLaren 650S Spider is incredible, so much so that there is little point looking at the 0-100 km/h performance figures. Instead, we should look at the 0-200 km/h figures, which can be achieved in a lightening fast 8.6 seconds. For a car with such speed, the steering is astounding and the damping is the best yet. Stability control and brake steer ensure this supercar remains focussed and responsive, whilst rear suspension ensures the control is tight even when braking into a bend. This dramatic looking supercar is one of the fastest and most exciting supercars on the road.

“The McLaren 650S Spider is even more intense than the coupé version, delivering open-top thrills”

While the McLaren 650S Coupé is impressive, the Spider is incredible. With a carbon fibre chassis, the Spider is as rigid and balanced as the coupé, and can still achieve 0-100 km/h in 3 seconds. The roof stows in seconds and sits neatly behind the buttresses, and once the top is down you can enjoy the thrilling road of the exhaust at full throttle. It looks great with the roof up or down, with stunning 19” alloy wheels and 20-profile Pirelli PZero tyres, and offers a generous amount of luggage space. This is the best open-top supercar on the road by far.
