Mini Cooper S Convertible Review

By Eric Palmer - Travel Writer and Petrol Head

Car Summary

The distinctively designed Mini Cooper S Convertible  is one of the most stylish, fun and safe cars you’ll find on the road. Hire a Mini Cooper S Convertible to experience the thrill of open air driving in a quirky soft-top cabriolet.

The Mini Cooper S Convertible hits an impressive top speed of 225 km/h, produces 184 bhp and makes 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Its turbo-charged engine, wide track, long wheelbase and low centre of gravity enhance its athletic abilities, whilst a wealth of safety features mean you can push this convertible to its limits with confidence. An advanced Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC) ensure optimum braking performance in any condition, whilst Automatic Stability Control + Traction (ASC+T) gives plenty of grip on the road and prevents wheel spin.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), including Hill Assist, provides stability in all driving situations, and an active aluminium roll-over bar activates in a matter of 150 milliseconds in the event of an emergency for added passenger protection. Driver and passenger airbags are standards, and the rigid collapsible steering column acts as a protective shield for the driver in the event of a front impact.

As well as being a practical city car, the Mini Cooper S Convertible is a handsome cabriolet with sporty styling and plenty of appeal. Ultra bright bi-xenon headlights with chrome surround, extra large front air intakes and a large black radiator grille suggest that this natty little convertible means business. This continues in the cabin, where you will find luxurious heated front seats, an iconic MINI central speedometer and a 6.5 inch high-resolution display screen.

The fabric roof provides good insulation in the cabin, and takes just 15 seconds to retract, at speeds of up to 48 km/h. There is plenty of room up front, and 125 L of storage space with the roof down. A Mini Cooper S Convertible is a reminder that great things come in small packages.

“For those who put an emphasis on style and fun”

This may not be the most practical and spacious car, but the Mini Cooper S Convertible is an excellent choice. With Mini’s universal desirability, superb handling and a fantastic choice of engines, the Mini Convertible is an excellent choice. The fabric roof retains the same silhouette as the hatchback, and includes a new front bumper and LED rear lights, as well as the large classic Mini speedometer. There is plenty of passenger space up front, and 125L of boot space for a small amount of luggage. The roof retracts at the touch of a button, operating at speeds of up to 48 km/h and taking just 15 seconds to retract, whilst the fuel economy is particularly impressive, with the Cooper S hitting 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds and emitting just 139 g/km of CO2.

“The Mini Convertible remains a popular choice for buyers looking for open-top fun with urban practicality and the ability to handle with a degree of finesse”

This is a desirable car with plenty of urban appeal. It is also fun to drive, with impressive performance and handling, and excellent grip on the road, particularly through corners. The cloth roof retracts at the simple press of a button, and the roll-over hoop safety bars are concealed to improve rearward vision when the roof is down. The 1.6L Mini Cooper S Convertible hits 100 km/h in 7.4sec and reaches a top speed of 222 km/h, and a Sport button weights up the steering for a more dynamic drive. Driving a Mini Cooper S Convertible is a choice of desirability over practicality, but a wise one if you are looking to have fun.
