Ferrari 488 GTB Review
Car Summary
Experience one of the world’s most incredible Sports Cars when you hire a Ferrari 488 GTB. The GTB stand for Gran Turismo Berlinetta, and this two-seater rear wheel drive supercar is as good on the road as it is on the racing track.
With a 3.9L twin-turbo V8 engine and an automatic dual-clutch 7-speed transmission, the 488 hits 0-100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and has a top speed in excess of 330 km/h. It delivers a blistering 660 bhp at 8,000 rpm, a maximum torque of 760 Nm in seventh gear and a throttle response time of 0.8 seconds at 2000 rpm when in third gear. Ferrari have focussed on achieving this incredible performance whilst maximising efficiency through advanced engineering and technological innovations. With unparalleled performance and extreme power informed by Ferrari’s expertise on the racetrack, the Ferrari 488 is easy to control even when pushed to its limits.
A raft of aerodynamic solutions are utilised for record-breaking efficiency, including an F1-inspired double spoiler and central Aero Pillar to maximise downforce. The aerodynamic underbody includes vortex generators to reduce air pressure and a large rear diffuser to optimise the expansion of much of the air channelled under the car.
The Ferrari 488 GTB was designed at the Ferrari Styling Centre, taking design inspiration from the original 308 GTB. The car looks sporty and agile, with clean lines and a form follows function design. A large dual grille characterises the front, whilst a double front spoiler channels air towards the underbody. A blown spoiler and large air vents dominate the rear, and new twin-tail exhausts enhance the sense of power and performance. Vehicle dynamics are concentrated on responsiveness, with the Variable Torque Management system designed to deliver increasing amounts of torque through the gears for racing-track style gear shifts.
Ferrari’s Side Slip Control System (SSC2) analyses the road and driving style to boost acceleration out of corners, integrating with the F1-Trac and E-Diff, as well as the active dampers to offer a drive that is dynamic, stable and controlled. The Brembo Extreme Design braking system gives 9% shorter stopping distances than previous models, and is designed to allow optimal cooling during extreme driving.
Enjoy the ultimate in driving pleasure when you hit the road in a Ferrari 488 GTB.
Reviews“The new 488 GTB is Ferrari’s replacement for the 458 Italia, which is a bit of a big deal: the 458 remained top of its class some five years after launch”
It is 43 kg lighter than the 458 Italia and a twin-turbo 3.9L V8 engine delivers an increased performance, producing 661 bhp at 8000 rpm and 561 lb ft at 3000 rpm. It maintains the same basic silhouette of the 458 Italia, though it takes a front bumper from the LaFerrari, and includes aerodynamic styling to reduce drag and maximise downforce. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox comes from the 458 Italia, but with 4-5% longer ratios, 30% faster upshifts and 40% fast downshifts. Driving the 488 GTB feels like a brilliant 458, with the addition of effective turbocharging and excellent responsiveness. The brilliant engine is paired perfectly with the chassis, and the drive is genuinely very exciting.
“The turbocharged Ferrari 488 GTB takes over from the 458 Italia - and the best just got better”
The 488 is an incredible drive with amazing speed and impressive power. Although it comes with a powerful 660 bhp 3.9L V8 engine, there was a concern that the turbocharging of the 488 GTB would impact upon the 458 Italia’s incredible sound. Turbocharging often has a dramatic effect of silencing the combustion engine, and with a brand such as Ferrari, the noise is key. Ferrari have however worked hard to ensure the sound is just right, producing an engine and exhaust note that will satisfy the demands of the discerning Ferrari customer. It is hard to tell that the engine is turbo-charged, even when driving at high speeds, and with an incredible drive and impressive performance, the 488 GTB represents a giant leap forward for Ferrari.
