Casa Batlo, the most conspicuous of the “Block of Discord” series was originally built for a middle class family of Barcelona and in 1904, Gaudi was commissioned to redesign the building. The result was a project that joined Gaudi’s playful and comic side with his usual strange if not wildly creative style. While the building has been ostensibly classified as modern art nouveau in truth it really represents a class of its own. The original facade was replaced with a design of glass and stone, while the front wall was given the effect of a wave as it bends and curves. This structure was plastered and then covered with a colourful mosaic of glass and ceramic fragments. In similar bizarre fashion the top of the building appears like the back of an animal, which many believe to be a dragon with scales and a spine decorated with round pieces of masonry. Creative - yes, bizarre most certainly, but then like the Ferrari, if you are going to stand out, you can’t just copy the rest of them.
