Ferrari 458 Spider Review
Car Summary
The first mid-rear engined car with retractable folding hardtop, the Ferrari 458 Spider is an incredible convertible sports car. With extreme comfort, generous luggage space and impressive performance, this is the ideal Ferrari for everyday driving. Fitted with a mighty 560 bhp V8 with an incredible sound and notable fuel efficiency, you can treat yourself to the ultimate open top driving experience with a high performance Ferrari 458 Spider rental.
From the front, the Ferrari 458 Spider retains much of the iconic styling and aerodynamics of the coupé. The rear however has been redesigned to incorporate the pioneering aluminium retractable hardtop that turns this coupé into one of the most exhilarating cabriolets on the road.
The inventive design team at Ferrari have created a lightweight roof formed of two folding panels, which at a the touch of a button will separate and rotate 180 degrees to stack one above the other at the rear. This whole process takes just 14 seconds and is performed in one beautifully graceful movement, maximising storage space available through its clever and compact design. Ferrari have managed to retain the impressive performance of the 458 coupé, with advanced engine technology such as their High Emotions, Low Emissions (HELE) system, which includes Start/Stop and a superb 7-speed automatic transmission.
The aerodynamics of the Ferrari 458 Spider also set it apart from other cabriolets, with aeroelastic winglets on the nose to generate downforce at the front, two side diffusers and a long curved roof that increases downforce at the rear.
Inside the lavish cabin you’ll find that Ferrari have paid meticulous attention to quality, style and ergonomics. The feel is sporty, and the F1 inspired cockpit-style layout places all controls on the steering wheel to enable complete focus on the road at all times. Vehicle Dynamic Assistance (VDA) aids the driver by evaluating the status of the vehicle at each moment, allowing you to push the car to the extremes of its performance capabilities in safety and there is plenty of storage space, with a 58 litre capacity front boot and space on the rear bench.
Reviews“The 458 works as well in Spider guise as it does as a coupé. And then there’s the noise...”
The Ferrari 458 Spider is everything one would wish for. The first mid-engined Ferrari to be given a hard top, the 458 Spider is a good looking car that has proved to be a success. Brilliant with the top up or down, the drive is fast, accurate and agile. Steering is precise, body control is superb and you don’t need to be a racing car driver to enjoy driving this machine. The cabin is luxurious, with plenty of leather and carbon fibre, an incredible amount of headroom and controls conveniently located on the steering wheel. Activate the roof with the press of one button, and the panel above you splits into two and rotates towards the rear in just 14 seconds. In short, it is a brilliant drive with a clever roof and enormous driving abilities.
“The convertible is just as good to drive as the 458 Italia coupé, with the bonus of a drop-top roof that lets you hear every note of that amazing 4.5L V8”
There isn’t much better to lift your spirits than driving an open top Ferrari, and the 458 Spider manages to maintain the qualities of the coupé without compromise. The retractable aluminium hard-top folds in just 14 seconds, cleverly slotting into a panel that rises up in front of the engine cover. It looks and sounds sensational, with the 562 bhp 4.5 litre V8 engine giving incredible performance, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that enables smooth gear changes without interrupting speed. 0-100 km/h takes just 3.4 seconds and the top speed is 318 km/h, but drive the Ferrari 458 Spider in Sport mode and you’ll be cruising comfortably wherever you go.
