Porsche 918 Spyder Review
Car Summary
A mid-engine plug-in hybrid convertible sports car, the Porsche 918 Spyder sets a new standard for low-emission high performance motoring. First unveiled at the 2010 Geneva motor show, the high performance plug in hybrid concept car was designed to meet one of the major challenges of our time; limited petroleum resources and a need to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Replacing oil with renewable electricity drives the ‘E-Mobility’ project, and Porsche aim to putt low-emission vehicles on our roads, whilst ensuring the necessary infrastructure is available in the form of optimally integrated vehicle charge ports and practical charging equipment for the home and on the road. Feel good and feel green when you hire a Porsche 918 Spyder.
Known as the E-Hybrid, the Porsche 918 Spyder combines two electric engines with a powerful 4.6L combustion engine. The seamless interaction of the combustion engine and the electric motor ensures a superb drive, and as a hybrid the 918 Spyder can be driven at the rear axle by the combustion engine, by the rear electric machine, or by both together.
There is also the option to use the second electric machine to activate the front axle, and Porsche’s Electric Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) automatically regulates power distribution between the axles.
The 918 Spyder has an incredible overall performance, with all three-power sources creating a power output of 887 hp and 800 Nm torque. There are four different driving modes, allowing for different interactions between the electric and combustion engines according to the driving conditions and style. You can drive in electric mode (E) for emission free driving or choose the Hybrid (H) mode, Sport Hybrid mode (S) or Race Hybrid Mode (R).
A new to the road top pipe exhaust system comes straight from the racetrack, quickly dissipating the heat from the combustion engine and reducing exhaust back pressure to increase power output and fuel economy. The lightweight body of 135 kg and the low position on the road optimise the dynamic driving and fuel economy. The combined fuel consumption of the 918 Spyder is 3.1L/100 km, combined C02 emissions are 72 g/km and electricity consumption is 12.7kWh/100 km.
Reviews“Wow, just wow. It’s incredible”
The 918 Spyder is a stunning supercar. Matching its environment brilliantly, the 918 Spyder is capable of being cool and quiet in the city, comfortable on motorways and country roads and confidence inspiring on the racetrack. The engine is fantastic, with instant thrust from the electric motors and the powerful V8 engine, which takes over for incredible high performance motoring. Inside it is utterly gorgeous, with plenty of gadgets and a centre console formed of a single piece of curved glass. You can drive up to 28 kilometers in electric mode, ideal for city driving, whilst you’ll get about 30 mpg for everyday driving.
“The art of understatement is evidently not lost on the good people of Porsche. Quietly under-promising and then spectacularly over-delivering is a surefire way to produce very satisfied customers. Always has been; always will be”.
While the Porsche 918 spyder could be considered a hyper car, in truth it is a car entirely in a category of its own. Comprised of a carbon fibre construction, a combustion engine and suspension that has been gleaned from the racing car prototype, the Porsche 918 represents a car to the likes of which the world has never seen before. The dual petrol-electric ‘plug-in’ powertrain has a lithium-ion battery that’s big at 12 kw, but it compensates for its size by supplying an abundance of force propelling the supercar forward at 50% more overall torque. Perhaps what gives the Porsche 918 its marketing advantage is its name, Spyder, where at the clip of two panels the roof slots neatly under the bonnet cargo compartment, giving passengers the heady freedom of driving in the open air.
“Styled in the vein of the Carrera GT supercar, the 918 Spyder draws on the best of Porsche's heritage, while keeping both eyes firmly on the present and future”
The 918 Spyder combines a compact 4.6L V8 engine with 608 bhp with an electric drive system that increases the power output to 887 hp. As a plug-in hybrid, it can recharge in less than seven hours from a standard household socket, and in less than 30 minutes with a DC fast charger for an industrial circuit. The 918 Spyder gives an impressive drive, with instantaneous acceleration and incredible high performance capabilities. In Hybrid mode, it is still a super fast sports car, and handling in all modes is brilliant. Steering is precise, and controls are weighted perfectly for each driving mode. The 918 Spyder is capable of driving at a top speed of 339 km/h, and can shoot from 0-100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds, and yet despite its stunning performance is remarkably efficient.
