Ancient Rome’s Colosseum is perhaps the most iconic out of all the city’s historic landmarks. Inaugurated in AD 80, the gladiatorial arena was intended to seat 50,000 people amongst its pillars. In its time it was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was built from a light-colored calcareous rock and had a huge canvas awning that was held aloft by 240 masts. An archeological achievement that it incredibly impressive for its time.

But the Colosseum was just as impressive underground as what it was on top. Underneath there was an enormous complex, known as the hypogeum, where preparations for the games were made, unwilling gladiators were caged alongside ferocious animals. Brought out to combat each other in the stadium, the fights were always to the death and every game always had its winner.
