Ancient Rome’s Colosseum is perhaps the most iconic out of all the city’s historic landmarks. Inaugurated in AD 80, the gladiatorial arena was intended to seat 50,000 people amongst its pillars. In its time it was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was built from a light-colored calcareous rock and had a huge canvas awning that was held aloft by 240 masts.
