Eric Palmer - Travel Writer and Petrol Head

The history of Dublin is as fascinating as it is long, the city was founded in the year 841 and originally settled by Vikings amongst a populations of Celtic tribes. By the 9th century the Danes captured Dublin and took control over the area until 1171 when they were driven about by King Henry II of England. Over the centuries the English extended its control over the city of Dublin and its nearby regional areas as well. Yet England’s domination over Ireland took a turn for the worse when in 1800, the Act of Union was sealed between Great Britain and Ireland abolishing the Irish Parliament. From this critical event, the Irish worked hard to gain their independance from Great Britain which took them over a century to finally claim in 1922, with the Easter uprising in 1916 becoming one of the majour turning points.
