Luxury Car Rental in Galway

Town of Ten tribes

Eric Palmer - Travel Writer and Petrol Head

Rent a Luxury car in the charming city of Galway as this city bustles with character, charm and a riveting nightlife. While legacy has it known as the City of the Tribes in more modern times it has become a tourist hub and a gateway to the stunning scenic areas of the Irish countryside.

Rent the luxurious and high performance BMW X5 and set out to discover more about Galway’s intriguing history. It earned its moniker as the City of the Tribes as in the early 15th century the region was ruled by a small number of fourteen merchant families, who after a time became known as the “tribes” included family names of Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, D'arcy, Deane, Font, ffrench, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris, and Skerritt.

Most of these names are Anglo-Norman, while only two of the families were Celts. As each of these families grew, so did their wealth and affluence and over the course of centuries they built many castles throughout County Galway. Many of these castles have been restored and maintained and can still be visited today.

For your time in Galway why not rent the robust and dynamic Land Rover Discovery? Once you’ve been able to enjoy the tourist hubs and cafes in town, this SUV will give you the perfect set of wheels to drive out across the rugged Irish landscape.

Drive out west of Galway city and head off towards the Connemara area where you will be able to visit towns like Carna, Spiddal, Carraroe, Barna. Each of these towns offer a wonderful historic atmosphere and beautiful countryside scenery. The locals tend to speak Irish as their first language, which is distinctly different to English. As a visitor this experience is always novel, but if you just can’t bring yourself to understand a single word, most of the time the locals will speak English too.
