Luxury Car Rental in Avignon

A Palace of Avignon

Stephanie Anderson - Lifestyle Writer and Fashion Addict

Avignon is a truly fascinating city that has its earliest roots trace back to prehistoric times. Being situated at the confluence of two mighty rivers; being the Rhone which is still one of the largest rivers of Europe and the Durance which today is mostly closed up by dams. These river bodies made it a popular trade route as people would ferry their goods across the river.

In medieval times, Avignon became the refuge of the Popes who were fleeing from the corruption they had instigated in Rome. On arrival they built an enormous palace for themselves  “Le Palais des Papes” and until today it takes the title of being the world’s largest Gothic edifice. Its vast and cavernous stone rooms were kept mostly empty throughout the course of most centuries, holding little more than ancient frescoes.

Arguably its value was to be found in its exterior, rather than the interior, as the tall ramparts were used to keep the plague out along with potential invaders. Throughout the middle ages marauding invaders were a prevalent threat as Avignon belonged to the papacy and not the French crown.

To this day Avignon is generously sprinkled with historic buildings and monuments that between them relay a tale as old as time.
